Big Question for Big Data

Interesting article by David Gibson at Varonis on Big Data, he starts

‘With the explosion of data growth and the demand for rapid, ubiquitous digital collaboration, IT knows traditional data management methods can no longer keep pace, so they are looking for advanced solutions to protect their data. The key with Big Data is to get past all the hype and to learn more about the practical benefits, like finding exposed sensitive data, flagging malicious activity and identifying excessive access.’

…and then goes on to explain how Varonis will solve the problems inherent in data explosion, e.g., managing access control,  identifying data owners, entitlements and authorisation processes, which DatAdvantage and DataPrivilige can do admirably, but he suggest automation is the ultimate answer, here is a gap in the argument. Varonis can tell you where sensitive data is but cannot apply metadata and protective marking to it.

Here is a thought, combine Varonis and TITUS Software together and you have the following use case.

New Data being created is classified upon creation and marked accordingly with Meta Data and Protective marking

Existing sensitive data can be found and filtered using Varonis and then automatically marked and meta data applied using TITUS, a virtuous circle for dealing with Old and New Data.

Now all data has metadata applied to it, you have ‘data’ about your data which can be used to apply policies to.

This certainly is a quick win if you are looking for a Big Win for Big data
